Mt. Shasta Fishout - Oct. 26th to 30th 2005
Fishmaster: Bruce Dau

Bruce Dau, Dougald Scott, Tom Donovan, Dougald Scott, Pete Thomas and I (Sam Bishop) had a great time, concentrating on the Upper Sacramento River. Kudos and many thanks to Bruce Dau for a great fishout. This was my first time there and first time nymph fishing, so Bruce was kind enough to teach Pete Thomas and me (the novices) the finer points of this craft. Then, in downtown Dunsmuir at the City Park, he led us to a hole where we took about 50 (fifty) fish in a couple of hours! The hole was not much bigger than a grand piano. From the same hole, the next day we took about a dozen, then did it again the following day.
Bruce is pretty incredible.
Sitting on streamside rocks, all thumbs for extended periods of time, then watching the speed with which Bruce and Dougald tie knots, I resolved not to waste so much fishing time struggling with knots. Each night for a week I had monofilament line out in the kitchen, practicing knots. So far I can tie the Perfection Loop knot correctly 4 out of 5 times. Also I decided on the Orvis Hook Knot instead of the old standard "improved clinch knot" to tie on small hooks, thanks to a Rod Tips article here a few months ago. I find the Orvis Knot much easier to tie and it seems to be effective in my kitchen "pull test." I'm much less likely to tie it wrong and not know it until too late.
