Upcoming Fishing Outings

Green River, Utah May 6th-12th
Fishmaster: John Steele 476-0648

The Green River trip is set for May 6th through the 12th. We will be staying at the Trout Creek Lodge this year. It's in Dutch John, right next to the Trout Creek Flies flyshop and guide center, and is close to the river. We have room for sixteen people at the lodge, so if you are interested, give me a call. It's a great place to learn because the fish and the responses to your fly are easy to see. The weather can be changeable, but it's always a good week. Give me a call at 476-0648, for information and to sign up to go. There are alternate places to stay as well, if more than sixteen people want to go, such as Red Canyon Lodge and Flaming Gorge Lodge._If you are planning to go on the train, call Elaine (688-1561) right away. We need to make train and car rental reservations as a group.

Roostercomb Ranch May 27th-29th
Fishmaster: Cecilia Stipes 335-5727, flyfishgal3@aol.com

There was such a response this year for the April Bass fishout that we have arranged for a second fishout here, over the Memorial Day weekend. This private ranch consists of 5,800 acres and seven bass ponds and two others within walking distance. It is located in the backcountry adjacent to Henry Coe State Park, 22 miles off Highway 152 near Casa de Fruta. It offers excellent bass fishing and an outstanding experience on a ranch with beautiful hills and open country for hiking and photography. There is a two-storey ranch house and a bunkhouse to accommodate everyone's needs. The ranch house overlooks the Orestimba River and is the historic site of Joaquin Murietta's adobe home during the 1800s. The bass ponds can be fished either from shore or in float tubes. Four-wheeled carpooling is a MUST. The weekend cost is $135 per adult. Call or email me as soon as possible to get one of the remaining openings on this fishout.

Davis Lake June 3rd-4th-5th
Fishmaster: Betty Rentz 427-9875, rentzb@santacruzpl.org

General: Lake Davis is a beautiful lake, filled with some large, aggressive trout. The lake is located near the town of Portola on Hwy 70. It has nice campgrounds right on the lake, and a resort with a motel and cabins, and there are motels in nearby Portola, five miles away. If the damsels are happening, you can fish from shore, but most people either float tube or fish from boats. YOU MUST WEAR A PFD, by law, on this lake.
Camping: We will use Grasshopper Flats campground for the evening meals Saturday thru Tuesday nights and general gathering. The fishmaster will be staying there. Look at the bulletin board at the campground entrance to see where everyone is. Post your site number after you check in. It's a nice campground with tables, fire rings and lighted bathrooms with flush toilets, and a pay shower-bring quarters. Most sites can accommodate two cars, and cost about $16 per night. You can reserve a site if you wish, but hopefully no reservations will be necessary. Reservations can be made at www.reserveusa.com or by calling toll free 1-877-444-6777. Each person attending is responsible for making his own camping/motel arrangements.
Lake Davis Resort: This resort has motel-type rooms and four cabins. Visit their website: www.lakedavisresort.com. There's lots of information about the lake, a map, etc. Their phone is (530) 832-1060. Also on this site is info about the Grizzly Store, phone (530) 832-0270. The store has basic supplies, ice, beer, etc. and FLIES that you can purchase. They also have a public shower ($4), and operate a hamburger and ice cream joint.
Motels in Portola: There are two that are decent: Sleepy Pines Motel (530) 832-4291 and Sierra Motel (530) 832-4223.
Food: Bring your own - everything. However, on Saturday and Sunday nights and maybe the other nights as well, we will do a group dinner/barbecue. So bring something to barbecue for yourself and something (salad, side dish, dessert, bread/butter, etc) to share each night. We will use one of the campsites as a central location for dinner-to be determined. BRING WOOD for the campfire.
Good Information: One of the local guides, Don Rotsma, has a great website filled with good advice on fishing the lake. Check out: www.flyfishwithdon.com. Especially check out the sections on "Strategies" and "Entomology and Flies." Read up on his "hanger system" for fishing damsels. It works!!! A good map of lake is there, also.
Rods & Lines: Don's website has good information on this. Basically, you should bring a 5-6wt rod, a floating and an intermediate sink line, and some indicators.
Basic flies: damsels (dark olive to brown), tied thin. Green stillwater nymphs (size 10-12), wooly buggers, especially olive in size 10-12, blood midge pupas and emergers in size 10-12 (they are big at this lake!), and some basic callibaetis nymphs such as pheasant tails, flashback pheasant tails, hare's ears and flashback hare' ears, Prince nymphs, dark lords, hairy princes, etc. in sizes 12, 14, 16. If the damsels are happening, you will see splashes all over the lake, especially in the bays near shore, and will want to fish near the surface with a floating line. If the damsels aren't happening, that's when we will want our intermediate sinking lines, or fish a floating line, with flies under an indicator.
Directions: Hwy 80 to Truckee. North on Hwy 89. In Sierraville, left on Hwy 49 for about 2-3 miles. At Sattley, right onto A23. At Hwy 70, go left for about 2-3 miles to Grizzly Road. Turn right, and lake is 7 miles. Stay on Grizzly Road all the way to the second campground, Grasshopper Flat.
Signup: We will do a sign up at the May meeting. It would be good to know who's camping or motelling it, and when you plan to arrive. For more info, or to sign up, call me at 427-9875

O'Connell-Bourdet Ranch - Bass June 10th
Fishmaster: Cecilia Stipes 335-5727 FLYFISHGAL3@aol.com

This is a day trip to a local ranch that offers bass and bluegill fishing. The ranch is located near Morgan Hill close to the Casa de Fruta Restaurant on Hwy 152. Four-wheel drive vehicles are mandatory for transportation onto this property to get up steep inclines. The two ponds we fish are nestled back in the hills side by side to an old cabin. With this year's rainfall, the ponds will probably be overflowing again and we expect the fishing to be great. As with the previous fishouts here, Dick and I plan to set up a barbecue lunch for everyone. The cost will be $80 per person. If you are interested, please contact me. There is no specific call-in date, but call no later than June 1st. Limited to 12 fishing persons.

Lake Almanor - Hex Hatch - June 16thÐ30th
Fishmaster: Tim Loomis 426-9248 surfcoop@sbcglobal.net

Members and families will come and go as their schedules dictate, and we will be a means to find each other when we're here.
Where: southwest side of Lake Almanor/PG&E campground off Hwy 89
When: Approximate dates: June 16th to the end of the month (members can stay longer if they desire).
What: The giant Hexagenia hatch that attracts the large rainbows and browns from the depths of the lake. The early hatch begins around 7:30 PM and lasts well past dark. Hexagenia dry, cripple, emerger and nymph patterns are the call. Sight casting to cruising fish just prior to zero dark-thirty is a memory that will last well into next year.
How: On Wednesday, June 21st, I've arranged for local guide and expert Lincoln Grey to conduct a clinic on the ins and outs of fly fishing the lake for those who sign up (and pay a share). You can sign up for the clinic at the May meeting, and I will have additional information on appropriate gear and tackle then.
Crowds are not a problem here, so the more the merrier.
Harry Petrakis says this is an experience not to be missed, and that Tim knows where the big ones live. Ðed

Fall River - Damsel Fishout - June 22nd-27th
Fishmaster: Cecilia Stipes 335-5727, FLYFISHGAL3@aol.com

This fishout is for women members of the Santa Cruz Fly Fishermen. (Sorry guys!) We reserved the riverfront home of Garry "Tick" Herceg again following the awesome experience we enjoyed last year. During this part of June we can expect the "hex hatch" to be peaking in these northern California waters, known for their large trout. The hexagenia hatch stimulates fish to voracious feeding activity (that must be witnessed to appreciate) and makes for some of the best fishing ever. We will also have opportunities to fish Hat Creek and Manzanita Lake. With Tick guiding, his experience and expertise in these waters will help us to improve our skills, learn about the hatches, and enjoy this fly fishing experience even more. Fishing Fall River is a unique experience...just ask those who went last year! The cost is $140 per person and, at this time, is limited to 6 women. Sign up will be by phone. Call me Monday, May 8 at 7:00 PM.

Trinity Lake July 5th Ð 9th
Fishmaster: Howard Power (530) 266-3728

In July, fishing opportunities include great fishing for smallmouth bass to 5 pounds in Trinity Lake and dry fly fishing for aggressive 8" to 16" trout in several area rivers, streams and lakes within a 30 minute drive from the Power home in Trinity Center, 6 to 7 hours' drive from Santa Cruz. Trinity Center is on the northwest shore of Trinity Lake, about 30 miles west and 30 miles north of Redding.
The fishout will be limited to the first 12 members who sign up at meetings or who contact Harry Petrakis at (831) 419-4245 . Harry will also organize provisioning and kitchen duties shared by those who attend. We have two guest bedrooms that sleep two in each. We also have a 15 X 75 foot deck and have four bed frames that can be used on the deck. You should bring towels, sleeping bag and pad, and be ready to sleep on the deck. July weather is great up here. For those who want to camp, Wyntoon Resort (530) 266-3337, less than half a mile from our house, has full hookups, tent sites, cabins, swimming pool, private beach, launch ramp, etc. This will be a busy week for Wyntoon, so make reservations early to insure availability.
Fish lakes from a float tube or pontoon boat using sinking lines and minnow or leech patterns. Use 4 to 5 wt rods in the streams. Fishing is good for hike-in alpine lakes, usually with snow on the ground nearby. Larger trout (to 24") are in Lewiston Lake, best fished from a pontoon boat or (electric motor) powered craft.
Please direct any questions to Harry Petrakis or the fishmaster . Local guides can be made available by contacting the fishmaster with your requests and needs. Hope to see you in July!
