Isn't Everybody Sick of Pat Steele?
by Pat Steele

Those of you who attended the August club meeting probably thought Walt Robinson's remarks were amusing when he said that as Pat Steele read the minutes of the previous meeting, his mind wandered, and he imagined her reading, "The meeting was called to order by Pat Steele, the minutes of the previous meeting were read by Pat Steele, the Treasurer's report was given by Pat Steele, and the Program was presented by Pat Steele."

I realize that many of the Officers and Members of the Board are away on vacation during the summer months, and I certainly don't mind filling in, taking minutes, reading the balance on hand into the minutes, and, in the event of a speaker having an emergency and not being able to give his presentation, giving an impromptu slide show. I'm not so fond of my own voice, though, and I'm sure there were those members in attendance who were tired of it as well. Everyone likes to have their ego stroked from time to time too, but that's not why I step in to fill so many absences, or attempt to do another Board Member's job. My only motivation is to keep the Club up and running, and the members getting what they come for when they attend meetings.

While I could whine and complain about the many obligations I've assumed on behalf of the Santa Cruz Fly Fishermen, I don't really feel like it. I truly enjoy my job as your print Newsletter Publisher and Webmaster. Those of you who know me know that I'm a geek to the bone, and doing those two jobs lets me flex my computer skills. It also lets me provide the Club with information, and the website puts our Club out where anyone can learn about us, find us, and join us. The other jobs I've done in Board Members' absences are not things I'd regularly like to take on.

What all this emphasizes is that too few of us Board Members are doing too many jobs. The solution for that is for you members, especially those of you who have not yet served as an Officer or Member of the SCFF Board of Directors, to step up and volunteer for one of the positions. The Board is a friendly, fun mixture of folks from all professions and interests, and the jobs on the Board aren't rocket science and don't require perfection. All they require is a willing spirit and the desire to keep the SCFF functioning and fulfilling its mission statement: To Promote, Educate and Enjoy the Sport of Fly Fishing. If you're sick of Pat Steele, this is your chance to do something about it. And even if you're not, we still need you on the Board.
