Tips on Fly Casting

New Year's Resolutions
Walt Robinson, Casting Master

There are a number of things we can do to make our fishing time more effective and I can't think of a better time than at the start of a new year. If there is one thing that I have noticed in casting the equipment belonging to the students, it is dirty fly lines! Built-up residue causes friction where the dirty line passes through the guides. I make it a habit to clean my fly lines at the end of a fishing day. For those who have been fishing at the Forebay this season, have you noticed the scum line on your float tube or boat like a bathtub ring? Think what might be on your line.
Simply washing it with mild soap and water is helpful for all types of lines, but using one of the many line cleaners or dressings that are available at your local shop will put a final touch on floating lines.
While you are at it, take a look at the guides on your fly rod and inspect them for burrs that may be scarring your line. You can pass a small square of a nylon stocking through the guide to assist you in locating them. A fine emery board may be able to smooth those out. [ed. A scrap of P400, then P600 SiC sandpaper around a small dowel or Q-Tip stick works best for me.] Finally, clean and lube your reels.
The list could go on but these resolutions will help make those perfect casts.
May the year 2007 be a good casting and fishing year for all.
