Reel Groove
by Elaine Cook

Although this doesn't happen very often, it is possible to create a groove in the metal where your line exits the spool, and in turn, cause two sharp edges to occur over many years of use, with the fisherman being in the habit of pulling line off the spool in a backward motion. Of course, this can tear your line up as it is being dragged across sharp metal.
A very simple solution is to use 5 minute epoxy to fill in the grooves and smooth the sharp edges. More than one application may be necessary to complete the repair.
Check your reels annually as this can also occur in the epoxy. Better yet, get out of the habit of doing this.
