Back Swimmer
by Elaine Cook

Here's one to have in your fly box for either bass or trout. It's a good lake and back eddy fly. Ask Tom Deetz how effective this fly was at Roostercomb Ranch last year when the bass got tired of his poppers.

Hook:200 R size 18
Thread:tan 8/0
Shellback:pearl Krystal Flash,
sharpie permanent marker
in olive and black
Legs:black rubber legs
Body:brown slightly fuzzy
dry fly dubbing
(not super-fine)

1. Crimp barb.
2. Tie thread in mid-shank.
3. Select 4-5 duck flank barbs; tie in with tips extending 1/2 hook shank behind shank with natural bend curved upward.
4. Select about 10-12 strands of Krystal Flash. Scotch tape ends to keep contained. Color first with olive, then with black, so both colors are evident. Tie in end of bundle on top back 1/2 of shank with bundle extending to rear of hook.
5. Position thread 1/3 back on shank. Secure so leg extends on each side of hook, slightly backward and length of hook. (See diagram).
6. Position thread at rear of shank. Make dubbing loop. Wrap thread to one eye length behind eye. Insert dubbing sparsely, twist, wrap body forward (slightly tapered fore and aft).
7. Pull shellback forward over body. Tie down behind eye. Apply small drop of Zap-A-Gap to secure fibers and prevent fish from pulling out. Allow to dry.
8. Whip finish; cut thread.
9. Epoxy shellback.
