Tips on Fly Casting

Line Hand Behavior
by Casting Master Walt Robinson

We have been exploring a number of casting techniques that employ the use of your line hand (left hand for right hand caster) as part of the cast. Last month's article focused on STOP SHOOT PINCH, where we worked on shooting some line on each forward cast. When you are finished shooting line and you are ready to put your line on the water, avoid letting the line go with no contact with your line hand. Always maintain control by making an "0" with tips of your index finger and thumb allowing subtle line control as it passes through this "guide." This will prevent the line from flipping up over the butt of your rod or some part of your reel. Your last move will be to transfer the line to your rod hand. Being religious about this technique will allow you to have greater control of the line and insure you will be fishing sooner after completing your cast as well as avoiding breaking off fish.
