Some Common Sense Tips
by John Pennington

The Coast Guard requires all boaters to carry a floatation device. Get one that's comfortable and will let you paddle should you need to wear it. You must also carry a sound-producing device such as a plastic whistle. If you're out between sunset and sunrise you must carry a white light visible from 360 degrees. A flashlight is not sufficient. A cell phone and VHF radio are not required by law but are good ideas. A waterproof bag such as the Simms Dry Creek lets you carry these items, and a camera, safely even while wading. I also carry a first aid kit in my waterproof bag. Two major causes of death while boating or tubing are drowning and getting hit by a motorboat. If you follow this advice, neither of those will be much of an issue. Use common sense, do not go out if the weather forecast is for wind and waves, leave in plenty of time to be home before dark, and in all instances use good judgment and common sense.
