Clear Hook Eyes
by Elaine Cook

Ever been in the situation where you arrive to fish, pull out that nicely-tied fly and you can't get the leader through the eye-it's glued shut! There are several methods to clear the eye. The sooner you do it the better.
1. At your fly-tying table, after putting head cement or Zap-A-Gap (or similar product) on the head, before it dries, run a fuzzy feather stem through the eye, butt of the stem first.
2. Check all purchased flies at the time you put them in your fly box, and clear the eyes with a needle or a bodkin.
3. On the stream, or lake, use the needle on your clippers, or another fly's hook point.
The earlier you clear, the sooner you catch!
