Saturday After the Club Meeting Surf Fishing
Fearless Leader: Sam Bishop
Saturday after our January 2nd meeting we will be surf fishing at Rio Del Mar State Beach starting at 8 AM, unless it is raining or high winds. Bring waders with a wader belt, stripping basket and a sinking fly line, preferably 7 - 8 weight, however a lighter weight will do if you are beginning. 8 - 10 lb leader is fine, the fish are not leader shy. I use a lead or tungsten shooting head, intermediate sink works fine.

High tide is at 07:35 AM and is rather high. Not the best conditions, but we will try it anyway. If too much kelp has been scooped up, we may adjourn to Manresa Beach, which will be our first choice in February. Take RDM Exit all the way to the bottom of the hill at the beach, make a U-turn left and go all the way to the State Beach. There is free parking outside. Later this year we will start earlier, but it is rather cold right now.
I will have some surf flies to give you, or you may buy them at Ernie's. I have a spare stripping basket as well if you would like to try one before buying (or making) one. Also there will be two available in the January 26th fund raising raffle.
Picture is of perch caught Dec. 24th. There are not a lot of bites, but the perch are good sized.

Save the date! Fishing Pack Trip - Bob Marshall Wilderness, MT
July 15th - July 25th
Dave and Kelly Lehrian - 761-8662

Kelly and David Lehrian are looking for four more people to round out a pack trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness July 15th - July 25th. The fishing will be done on Young's Creek with a few day excursions to the South Fork of the Flathead River to legally target Bull Trout! Young's Creek and the Danaher Creek come together about two miles down stream from the campground and create the South Fork of the Flathead. The fishing is outstanding with 50 fish days not out of the question (OK, Kelly counted 48 fish one day last year). The fish are all native Westslope Cutthroat and Bull Trout. Most Cuts are in the 14" - 16" range, with 18"- 20" certainly possible and the Bulls range from 25" - 35". The cost is $2650 per person, which includes everything except airfare. We arrive on July 14th and pack in on the 15th, pack out on the 25th and fly home on the 26th. It's about eight hours on horseback to get to the camp. You will probably not see any people outside of our own group the entire trip. Space is limited to a total of six and we have two confirmed already so let David know ASAP 831-761-8662.
