Tales of fishing outings, all true!

* March 19 - Lake Nacimiento
Gil Santos invited me on a trip to Lake Nacimiento to go for white bass, so who was I to refuse? We traveled early in the morning, launched Gil's boat, and promptly got lost in the fog. We could see fish holding in various places around the lake, but none of them were biting anything we threw at them until around 1:00 PM, at which point they all got hungry! We couldn't miss, even caught some spotted bass, and loads of white bass, who really liked a pale green shiny Krystal Flash clouser I had in my arsenal. Thanks, Gil, for a mid-week getaway treat, even though it made me late to the SCFF budget meeting. It was well worth it. - John Steele

* Mid March - Lake Amador

We fished Amador three afternoons while skiing at Kirkwood. First day, two beautiful 22-24 inch fish in great conditions with little pressure. Next day, new set up for Lily: floating line two unweighted woolly buggers three feet apart less than 5 minutes - Bang! Six pound trophy trout. (sorry no picture) Later on, Jim cast to a feeding 8 pounder, super fat fish. These fish pull really hard and heavy rods and tippet really help. The big fish was on a 5 weight rod, with 3X tippet, too light! Recommend 6 weight or heavier 2X or better tippet. Last afternoon, extreme pressure from bait fishermen and crazed power boaters made float tubing frustrating. We blanked. Fly fishing is really difficult as these fish don't respond to any conventional natural presentations on a consistent basis. Keep trying different stuff and maybe you will figure it out and share with us. - Jim Mitchell and Lily King
