Lake Amador - April 11-12, 2008
Fishmasters: Don Wilcox - (408) 559-3454, and Peter Purtscher - 246-3873

This lake is privately run. It's three hours from Santa Cruz (on Hwy 88 near Jackson, CA) and what the fish lack in numbers they make up for in size. If you have ever wanted to be towed in a float tube by a fish, Lake Amador trout can do this. If you have never fished from a float tube, and want to treat this trip as an introduction to float tubing, I will have float tubes for loan for those who call in advance to reserve one.
The cost per day, for one car, with two people and two float tubes is $24. The link to the Lake Amador website, with parking and launching information and fishing prices is www.lakeamador.com.
Fishing: Use a float tube or boat. Fish are in the top five feet of water. Use floating or intermediate sinking lines. Fishing is good from first light.
Camping: For those wishing to stay overnight, the link with the Lake Amador overnight RV camping info and costs is: www.lakeamador.com/fees.htm.
Lodging: The Eureka Street Inn (www.eurekastreetinn.com) is owned by Chuck and Sandy Anderson formerly of Santa Cruz. It's a great place to stay! The Best Western Inn in Jackson has low winter rates, and there is a campground as well. If you have questions, call Don Wilcox at (408) 559-3454.
There will be a sign-up sheet at the April meeting. There is no limit to the number of people who can attend this fishout, but the fishmasters need to know who is coming, and Don will need to know who will need a loaner float tube. Call Don or Pete if you plan on going, and we will tell you where and what time we will be meeting.
Directions: Hwy. 17 North past Los Gatos; exit 17 onto Hwy. 280 South (to San Jose); continue 280 to 680 North; exit 680 onto 580 East; Hwy. 580 becomes 205; continue 205 to Int. 5 North (Stockton); exit Hwy. 4 East to Hwy. 99 North; continue Hwy. 99 North about 1 mile; exit onto Hwy. 88 East (Jackson); exit Hwy. 88 at sign for Lake Amador; right on Jackson Valley Rd. to Lake Amador.

This is an annual Fly Club tradition. The event is hosted in conjunction with the Santa Cruz County Parks, Education and Conservation Program. Our club and the sport of fly fishing are recognized for taking care of our environment and passing on a conservation legacy.
Quail Hollow Ranch is a beautiful mountain park acquired by the county in the mid 80s, it features a 300 acre preserve that was once the home to Ohlone Indians, Spanish ranchers, even the headquarters for Sunset Magazine. Now home to few horses, a natural history center and a spring-fed "untouchable" Bass and Blue Gill Pond. Don't forget the binoculars, this is a major stop on the birdwatchers circuit. The Ranch is located above Felton, about a mile up Zayante Rd, a left turn just past the old Trout Farm Inn, (you gotta love that ).

The day is geared toward introducing and educating people as to why the members of our club are so hooked on fly fishing.
Our club president, Tim Loomis, will be the Master of Ceremonies and Professor of Fly Fishing 101 at 10:15 AM, followed by Master Caster Walt Robinson, hosting two levels of casting clinics at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM . Our Mistress of Fly Tying, Elaine Cook, will be hosting classes all day. Custom rod building will be taught by Master Rod Wrapper John Steele.
More fun events are planned:
Open casting for fun and laughs, blindfolded fly tying contests, roll casting pond, and spey casting.
What about those kids and grandkids? Just bring them! We will have a kid's program from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon.
This is all going to happen rain or shine. Everything is provided, rods and reels for casting, fly tying materials, vises, lights and tools.
Feel free to bring your own equipment. It is should already be packed in your car, trout season opens the following week!
Let's make this a great club event, this is a special invitation to all members to come out and have some fun and talk over the barbeque. Oh yeah! The Killer Barbeque starts at 12:00 noon. A free lunch for anyone with a smile and "a short fly fish story ".
Tell a friend and bring a friend to our "Club Event" at Quail Hollow Ranch. Sunday April 20th, rain or shine.
Directions: Graham Hill Road to East Zayante Road and travel about a mile, pass the Trout Farm Inn, take a left at the Quail Hollow Road bridge. Follow the road about a 1/2 mile and you will see the entrance on your right. For more info contact Troy Mayers, troy@orcasports.com or call (831) 429-5464.

I am happy to announce that this year's annual Roostercomb Ranch fishout is good to go! The ponds are so full, they are spilling over from the 18 days of rain we had in January, assuring us the drought is over. If the rains continue, I expect the wildflowers will be spectacular as well.
This is a great fishout for anyone who wants to experience a true ranching and wilderness adventure that also offers some of the best bass fishing. Seven ponds are on the property of the Roostercomb Ranch and two ponds are just outside the ranch boundary on Henry Coe State Park. You can fish from your float tube, kayak, or the bank.
The ranch and bunk houses provide our sleeping, kitchen, and bathing facilities. Breakfast and dinner meals are coordinated and shared by members. CRUCIAL: Every vehicle traveling in to the ranch must be 4-wheel drive. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition and has good tires. If you don't have a 4-wheel vehicle, there is always someone with whom a ride can be shared.
The trip begins Friday morning at 8:00 AM at Casa de Fruta Restaurant on Hwy 152 from where we caravan back 20 miles to the ranch. Our return on Sunday will start around 3 PM from the ranch house, arriving to the restaurant about 4:30 PM.
The Green River - May 10th-17th
Fishmaster: John Steele - 476-0648

If you are considering a trip to Utah in May to join us on this fishout, it isn't too early to begin planning. This river is a tailwater of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir Dam, situated in the northeast corner of Utah. It carves its way through a spectacular red rock canyon, and is the home of a healthy number of large brown and rainbow trout. It is rare to catch one under 16 inches, and not uncommon to catch several over 20 inches.
The Santa Cruz Fly Fishermen group will be staying at Trout Creek Flies Lodge, which can house up to 16 people, with four people sharing each of their four rooms, but if you call later and cannot book a room with Trout Creek, there are other options in the area, such as Flaming Gorge Lodge, (435) 889-3773, and Red Canyon Lodge, (435) 889-3759. There are also several campgrounds in the area, if you are driving an RV and wish to camp.
If you are planning to take the AmTrak train, call Elaine Cook at 688-1561. If you plan to drive, (it's a day and a half's drive) call John Steele, at 476-0648. If you are going to fly from San Jose to Salt Lake City, then rent a vehicle, you should shop online for the best deal, as soon as possible, or consult your travel agent. Likewise, if you need more details, or want to sign up for this fishout, call John. A sign up sheet will be available at the April meeting.
Roostercomb Ranch Fishout #2 - May 24-26, 2008
Fishmaster: Cecilia Stipes (831) 335-5727
Cost: $165 per person over 16 yrs.

There is a second Roostercomb Ranch bass fishout slated for the Memorial Holiday weekend, May 24-26. Fishing at this warmer time of year in the past has produced larger bass, lots of panfish and occasional catfish. Whenever we have visited the Roostercomb Ranch, it has been a successful fishing experience and a lot of fun. The RC Ranch is a great place to enjoy your Memorial Holiday weekend.
Please contact me by phone or email ASAP if you are interested in going as I need to submit a general head count to the rancher per his request. For details about this fishout, please refer to the information in the first Roostercomb fishout article or contact me directly.
