Sam's Saturday Surf Fishing
by Sam Bishop

Saturday, March 8th, we had a great turnout of members for the monthly surf fish out, a total of eleven!! However, I was astounded that no one caught any fish! So that was a "downer" on an otherwise beautiful day with great company! While we were out there, a fellow (non-member) using a surf spinning rod caught three nice sized Stripers. I tried the hole, but they weren't hitting what I was throwing!
Attendees were Harry Schoonbaert, Kennette Roberts, Elaine Cook, Tom Bradley, Kent Hull, Mike Koslosky, Rob Dumford, Dave Jensen, Richard Kline, Paul Schraeder, and Sam Bishop.
The next surf fish out is scheduled for 06:30 am (sunrise), April 12 at Palm Beach (Pajaro Dunes). It will be a mid-ebb tide, with low being negative at 11:30 am. Negative low tides offers the opportunity to see channels and rip tides that are not necessarily evident at other times.
Someone asked me why early mornings? Well (1) there are less people on the beach, so I am less likely to hook one of them, (2) later, the wind changes from off-shore to on-shore, making casting more difficult, (3) I have not personally caught a Striper after 0945 am, (4) I hate it when I get there and someone tells me "They were really biting before you got here!"
