Tales of fishing outings, all true!

* May 20th - Lower Sacramento River
Fished for shad with Gil Santos, Pat Murray and Ed Marcillac on the Lower Sac around the Princeton area. Weather was cool in the early morning; sunny and hot in the afternoon. High speed/high D shooting heads of 15' were enough to get down to the shad. Pat Murray had the hot hand early on and she capitalized on her position and precision double hauling to land a good dozen shad by lunchtime.
Gil seemed to be pretty consistent as well. We were all using various shad flies in gaudy, fluorescent colors. Later on in the day we were joined by Bill Fischer, father of bay area fly tier, Phil Fischer, who has been a guest speaker for the club on a couple of occasions. Bill made a couple of wise cracks on his son's recent article on shad fishing in the California Fly Fisher. Seems that the elder Bill Fischer would have liked to keep the popular shad spots on the Lower Sac out of the media limelight. Phil can expect soot in his Christmas stocking this coming December!
Ed Marcillac has to be the consummate guide. Always with a kind word about your casting and than a follow up tip on another way to get those" poor man's tarpon" to hit. All in all it was a beautiful day on the river. Fish were caught and the company was absolutely top notch. - Tim Loomis

* May 3rd - Lower Sacramento River

On Saturday, May 3, Dick and I, took our first guided fishing trip down the Lower Sacramento River. Brian Bommarito, (a former SCFF member, now turned pro-guide for the Redding Fly Shop), did a great job putting us into fish that were willing to take our super-floss stonefly nymphs, P.T. nymphs, and tan poopahs. The weather was perfect in the mid-70's. A slight breeze keep the PMD's and caddis lifted in the air and occasionally stoneflies and salmonflies were seen. We had a workout nymphing from 9 AM until 7 PM on Brian's driftboat. We learned a lot! - Cecilia Stipes
