Yellow Crown
submitted by Elaine Cook

Wow, what a fly this was at Pyramid 2008! It mimics Chironomus Utahensis, a specific midge (chronomid) found in Pyramid Lake. This fly has a real translucent appearance, like the insect. It is a very easy fly to tie.

Hook:2457 (heavy scud)
size 10
Body:White 1/0 waxed monocord
Plastic sandwich bag
Rib:White thread as above
Head:Yellow 1/0 monocord
Glues:Zap A Gap and Hard As Nails
clear nail polish (Sally Hansen)

1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach white thread one eye length behind eye, leaving long tag. (Note: make all thread wraps touching and spin thread counterclockwise frequently to flatten).
3. Wrap thread to rear (over tag), half way around bend of hook. Let tag hang loose. Wrap thread forward to tie in, then 3/4 back on shank. Wrap forward again to tie in, then 1/4 back on shank. Wrap forward again to tie in, then back 1/8 back on shank. Build a bulge with thread wraps (see diagram) and finish at tie in.
4. Cut plastic in 3/8 wide strip, several inches long. Attach at tie in, laying flat down shank. Palmer thread wrap to rear, forcing plastic to surround shank. Palmer thread forward to tie in. Wrap plastic around shank, forward in overlapping wraps behind hook-eye. Tie off behind hook eye. Cut excess.
5. Palmer thread tag in progressively wider wraps, opposite direction than the plastic. Tie off, cut excess.
6. Whip finish in no more than 3 wraps. Cut thread. Apply small drop of Zap-a-Gap.
7. Before it dries completely, attach yellow thread in only 3 wraps, then whip finish in 3 wraps. You have made a small yellow head. Cut thread.
8. Apply Zap-a-Gap to entire fly, allow to dry.
9. Apply Hard-as-Nails, allow to dry.
