SCFF ConFab 2009
by Kirk Mathew

Saturday, February 21st, SCFF members, family, and friends gathered at Santa Cruz Gardens School for the annual ConFab, and it was indeed con-fabulous! The weather held, spirits were high, and 75 of the aforementioned enjoyed food, instruction, demonstrations, bargains, conversation, and the pleasure of one another's company.
Vice President Troy Mayers was everywhere generating enthusiasm, setting up the food and keeping the whole affair moving along smoothly. Elaine Cook did yeoman duties instructing eager students in tying the L.A. Times "Yellow Sally" as well as running the "Blind Fly Tying" contest, where contestants tied the venerable "Mickey Finn". Kasey Mathew narrowly edged out John Steele for top honors.
Walt Robinson put on several excellent clinics covering basic casting, as well as casting for distance and accuracy. He also organized the annual "Big Dog" casting contest, won by Kathy Powers. Harry Petrakis lead a well-attended knot clinic, assisted by Gill Santos and John Steele.
Robert Ketley gave a fascinating presentation on "Fly Fishing in the Surf". Pat Steele provided audio/visual services. Troy Mayers brought his event grill and Kirk Mathew flipped the burgers. A number of members brought items for sale or trade. Tim Loomis, Kathy Powers, Rich Rubin, gave generously of their time and knowledge about equipment, casting in general and spey casting in particular. And as common in this Club, lots of people helped out in many ways. Old and new members met and had fun together. In short, ConFab 2009 was well run, well attended, informative, and a bunch of fun. Thanks to all who helped and all who attended!
