Palomino Midge - Black
submitted by Elaine Cook

Here's a very easy fly to tie. There are a lot of lakes that have significant bug life, like Davis and Milton, where this fly is very effective fished under an indicator. If there are blood midges, use the red.

Hook:2487 sizes 14-18
Thread:black 8/0
Abdomen:black Micro Chenille
Wing Case:white Z-Lon or Antron yarn
Thorax:black rabbit
Antennae:white Z-Lon

Note: These midges can be made on a variety of colors. Just change thread, abdomen and thorax colors to brown, olive, or grey. A red variety is made with: tan thread, red abdomen, tan thorax.

1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach thread mid shank, wrap backward to between hook tip and hook barb.
3. Abdomen: Prepare end of abdomen by quickly inserting and retracting tip in blue part of a candle flame. The material will change shape from blunt to tapered. Lay on top of shank so the length equals the length of hook. Tie in place, wrap to one eye length behind hook eye.
4. Wing Case: Tie in on top of shank in front of abdomen, allowing strand to extend to rear.
5. Thorax: Dub a generous, bulbous thorax.
6. Wing case and antennae: Bring Z-Lon over thorax and tie off with 3 thread wraps behind hook eye. Hold antennae upright, push backward on base of antennae with thumb nail. Make about 6 wraps thread between hook eye and antennae. Cut antennae so it equals length of thorax.
7. Half-hitch on top of these thread wraps. Cut thread.
8. Finish by cutting short any long aberrant rabbit fibers.
