Rubber Leg San Juan Worm
submitted by Elaine Cook

Worms live in the bottom of most streams and river beds. Needless to say, they are a lot of protein for trout, and must taste good since they will readily feed on them, During the Mammoth fishout last fall, Chris Walters caught a gazillion one day, including a 22 + incher (that got away) on the upper Owens. This is a very easy fly to tie.

Hook:Size 16 TMC 2457
(heavy scud hook)
Thread:Red 8/0
Body:Red or hot pink rubber legs
(medium or regular size)

1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach thread behind hook eye, wrap to part way around bend of hook in touching wraps.
3. Cut piece of rubber legs 1 3/4" long. Place on top of shank so equal amounts of rubber extend beyond each end of the hook.
4. Attach rubber leg with three snug thread wraps, one top of the other.
5. Hold rubber leg up, wrap thread forward to mid shank.
6. Lay rubber on top of shank. Make two thread wraps, pull rubber leg forward. Make one more snug wrap.
7. Lift rubber leg and advance thread to behind hook eye.
8. Repeat step #6.
9. Lift rubber leg and tie off behind hook eye. Cut thread.
10. Turn hook upside down in vise. Using bodkin, apply small amount of Zap-A-Gap (or the like) to thread wraps along shank.
