SCFF Conservation Update - August, 2009 by Dennis McVey

Hello, fellow SC fly fishers. Hope you're getting in some great fishing time as the summer progresses, some good experiences, and catching lots of fish as well. Here's an update on a few items the SCFF Conservation Committee:
The budget has been approved, for our initial donations, and the checks will be mailing out next week to those approved organizations.

We will be trying to schedule some short visits from the local organizations and conservation causes, that we are supporting, to give us some presentations of their efforts and progress, and how we might help. We are planning to schedule a volunteer day with one or two of them for the fall or spring. Jim Tolonen will be contacting a couple of the organizations (MBT&SP and the Watershed Academy) to start a dialogue about presentations and volunteering.
Our STEP contribution is for sending a new local teacher to the training program for using the steelhead hatching as part of the classroom science program curriculum. Barry Burt will be coordinating the selection if they have any potentially interested teachers. If you personally know of anyone good for this position, get in touch with one of us and we'll get them to Barry.

Here's an interesting item we could easily help out with while out in the field:
" Subject: Western Gull sightings - help local researchers
From: Danielle Frechette westerngull@gmail.com
"A collaborative study currently is being conducted by researchers at the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, UC Santa Cruz, and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories to assess the effects of predation by birds, particularly Western Gulls on Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout in watersheds located in Santa Cruz, CA. If you sight any of our banded birds, we would love to know where, when, and what the bird was doing. You can contact us at westerngull@gmail.com
Please provide us with the following information: Date, Location, Time of day, Band ID (color as well as letter and number combo), Whether the bird has a radio-transmitter, and if so, the color of the harness, and Bird behavior.
Thanks! Danielle Frechette, westerngull@gmail.com
Have a great summer and Fish On! - Dennis
