July Surf Fishout
by Sam Bishop

July 5th, the Sunday after the Fourth of July saw nine of us at Manresa Beach. Jim Hall, being one of the first to arrive, was also one of the first on the beach. Well, the early bird gets the worm, so while I was still up in the parking lot, Jim brought in this 29-inch beauty on his fly line, using a pretty common orange perch fly on 6-pound test leader.
A few people caught some perch, Tom Bradley got about four, Rich Hughett got his first perch, Michael DiCiano got a couple, Pat Marshall and others probably did too. First-timers included Dave Doughty and Cecilia Stipes. Mike McGuire from the Peninsula club again joined us as well.
Bourdet Bass Fishout, July 11, 2009
Fishmaster: Cecilia Stipes

This one-day bass fishout at the Bourdet Ranch started at 7:15 AM, under a virtually cloudless sky, The ponds were again in good condition: full of water, fish, and just enough tules and grasses to make it interesting, all of which offered excellent conditions for multiple hook-ups. Those present were Gary Ketelson, Efrain Montana, Jayne Hawley, Sophia Zadubera, Richard and Cecilia Stipes. Efrain was the most consistent fisher catching fish all day giving credence to his "Montana magic". Sophia and I picked his brain for the "perfect fly of the moment" as the afternoon wore on. A surprise rain did not dampen our enthusiasm or interrupt our casting to the active fish. A report of the wild side: we sighted a red-tailed hawk dive and clutch a ground squirrel only to drop it in flight (the squirrel seemed to survive), two screeching red-tailed hawks chased a golden eagle, and a 250-pound boar was rooting by a pond.
