Mark Thomas, Jim Hall, Chris Walters, Kirk Mathews, Pat Marshall, Gary Hazelton and I (Gary and I are not in the picture) all met at Manresa State Beach the first Saturday of January, but it took only a few minutes to agree that the surf right there was too nasty to fish. So quickly we adjourned to Rio Del March Beach and worked from Aptos Creek up towards the concrete ship, where the swells were lower, because it is more sheltered. Only a couple of hookups and one fish landed, because the water was so torn up that visibility was really poor. But it did prove that the fish are there no matter how bad it looks to us.
