Nelson's Caddis
submitted by Elaine Cook
When you want to simulate a caddis that floats in the surface film yet is still fairly easy to see, try this one. Be sure to apply ample floatant to the body.

| Hook: | TMC 100, sizes 10-12 |
| Thread: | Brown or Olive 6/0 |
| Body: | Brown or Olive Hairtron |
| Wing: | Elk Hair |
| Antenna: | Stripped neck hackle stems |
| Hackle: | Furnace (brown can be substituted) |
1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach thread 1/4 back on shank. Wrap thread base to rear of shank.
3. Dub 1/4 of the shank. Wrap over dubbing a couple of times to hold it together.
4. Select a small bunch of elk hair. Clean out under fur and short hair & stack tips.
5. Place elk hair on top of shank, tips extending a hook gap length beyond bend of hook. Make first thread wrap around elk only, second around both elk and shank. Wrap in place with several snug wraps.
6. Cut butt ends of elk hair at an angle. Securely wrap to shank. Apply small amount of Zap-A-Gap.
7. Dub another section of body covering another 1/4 of shank. Be sure to make the body uniform in width, not segmented.
8. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 two more times. Keep wings the same length each time so there is a staggered appearance.
9. Advance thread to behind the hook eye.
10. Strip barbs off stems of 2 hackles near tips. Match up together, cut unstriped tips off. Tie in on top of shank with tips extending beyond eye of hook, about hook length with curve upward. Wrap thread in close wraps back to wing. Cut butts of antenna.
11. Select hackle with barbs 1 1/2 hook gap size. Cut off any fuzz. Cut 3 - 4 barbs short on each side of butt end of stem.
12. Lay prepared part of hackle on shank, light side facing you and top to rear. Tie in. Leave thread hanging in front of wing.
13. Wrap hackle sparsely (2 - 3 wraps). Tie off right in front of wing. Cut excess.
14. See-saw thread forward. Wrap thread head. Whip finish. Cut thread.
15. Cut away hackle on underside according to illustration.
