March Madness
by President Sam Bishop

Pyramid Lake 2010 almost lived up to last year for surprises. Last year we woke up to about 6 inches of snow, this year we woke to about 3 inches. I think it was colder in the mornings than last year! I was only there Sunday - Wednesday, but had a reasonable time catching. Pyramid has not been really good to me, I have been known to get only one fish in two days. This time was better. Perhaps I would do better if I fished the nets, but I simply enjoy going other places where I can fish from the shore or float tube. Everyone seemed to be catching fish on beetles, so I rigged up two beetles, one white and one black, about 3 feet apart with a small split shot halfway between them. I caught six fish on the black beetle and finally the last fish on a white beetle as I was fixing to leave. That's probably because I snapped off the black beauty behind me just before the end.
While I was there, Gary Hazelton was the real winner, 14 in one day! But he earned it, as he starts early and caught 10 before 8 AM that day. (I started fishing about 8 AM.)

Quail Hollow Ranch Public Education Day
Saturday, March 20th

Chris Walters did a great job organizing the Public Education Day this year and it was quite well attended. It was very pleasing that Kirk arranged to have several Boy Scouts attend and work towards another merit Badge. His son is a great fly tier. I was instructing some of the boys on a surf fly and Kasey politely showed me a better, more sturdy way to assemble it. Thanks Kasey!
Troy Mayers had to work and could not attend, but generously donated the use of his fabulous stove (Chef Eric produced great burgers and dogs). Troy also entrusted us with his great collection of rods for us to use. Linda Heyes was everywhere helping with everything. Tim held his group spellbound with the marvels of Fly Fishing 101.
Walt was pretty busy all day with group and individual and group fly casting instruction, assisted by Vic Inouye and others.
Poor Elaine had her back flare up again and could not be there, but arranged for Doug, Cecilia, Kathy, and Sharon to do fly tie demos and instructions. They fascinated the Boy Scouts, the Cub Scouts (my grand children included) and adults alike.
My apologies to those whose names I forgot to include here, but be assured your assistance was greatly appreciated on this most successful, youth oriented day.

Finally, a reminder to please bring and wear your name badge at the meetings.
