Sierra Horse Pack Trips for Golden Trout
Guest Speaker: John Rosica

John is with Bob Tanner's Pack Station Eastern High Sierra at Red's Meadow Resort. He is a backcountry chef, serving pack outfits that crisscross the eastern and western slopes of the mountains, some of his 21 mules carrying his collapsible kitchen. He is a member and past president of the Los Gatos Horsemen's Association. As a backcountry chef, Rosica's skills parallel those of chefs in any upscale restaurant, but he creates his dishes under primitive conditions.

"I do it because I love it," he says.

Another draw of the job is the cosmopolitan people he meets and learns from on his trips. To date, he's been taught how to cuss in Persian, Hungarian, Hebrew, Sicilian, French, Arabic, Spanish and Chinese.

"If you can swear in their language, people think you know a lot more," he grins.

Gregarious and an avid storyteller, Rosica loves to have fun. He has an advantage over his kitchen-bound contemporaries by being able to ride and mix all day with the folks he feeds. A showman by nature, he dresses the part of an 1880s cowboy, carrying some 16 outfits complete with neck scarves and fringed chaps in his horse trailer. "I was born too late," he says.

The pack bosses call him "Hollywood."

Come and enjoy what promises to be an inspiring evening of High Sierra scenery and learn all about horse-pack trips with John, who will have you dreaming of catching a beautiful golden trout.
