Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project Annual Hatchery Volunteer Training Day
May 15TH, Saturday, from 9:00 AM until approx. 4:00 PM

Location: At Kingfisher Flat Hatchery, located on Swanton Road, just north of Davenport. Directions will be provided.
Bring your lunch and beverages. Dress in layered clothing, but watch weather reports. Session could be cancelled in case of rain.
Please call Mary Hermansky: 831-331-5586, or email: mhermansky@cs.com, if you are interested in attending.

Volunteer Training will include: "The Daily Routine". The Routine consists of logging pertinent habitat information, such as river water and climate temperatures, and rainfall. Fish care will be reviewed with hands-on experience. The type and location of Fish Care changes throughout the year during the growth cycle. New volunteers will be paired with experienced volunteers during these changes. However, Spring is when the fish care cycle is the most intense at the hatchery. In addition, instruction for clearing the intake of leaves and river debris upstream will be given. This is especially important during late Autumn and the Fall months as the trees shed their leaves which can clog vital water flow through the hatchery raceway and pools.
Volunteer Training will also cover Safety and Hazard issues. Volunteer safety is as much a concern as our efforts to resuscitate Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout natural habitat populations.
Volunteers are essential to running our organization. They cover Saturdays, Sundays, Legal Holidays, and at times, a weekday when our hatchery manager attends departmental meetings. Volunteers are free to choose a schedule rotation that works for them, whether it be once a month or every 6 weeks, or on call for weekdays only. The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project wants to be accessible for all schedules.
Please refer to our website: www.mbstp.org for further information on our organization, past activities and newsletters, and future activity dates. We are in the process of building an effective website and we hope you find it informative.
