January 21st - Monterey Bay
The usual pattern of heavy swell had subsided, and rather than clean the boat, I decided to take it out to South Rock in the late morning. There was no wind, but a confused sea with low swell coming from three different directions...promising conditions for winter ling cod. Couldn't interest the ling cod with plastic swim baits on the bottom, but did mark some suggestive echoes at midwater (30-60 feet). Switched to fly outfit with lead core and a small flash Clouser (Ed Marcillac's striper pattern), fished deep. Caught several small black rockfish and then scored on a keeper. This was followed by 5 and 3 pound olive rockfish, which hit and fought hard. By this time the wind was up and it was time to go in...hard to believe I was only out for 1 1/2 hours! Dougald Scott
January 14th - Big Sur River
Fished the Big Sur River today. Beautiful water, so clear, but alas, no fish. - Tim Loomis
