Instructions on how to tie a seasonally timely fly

The fly tying class this month is featuring a caddis in the adult stage shedding its shuck. This pattern is the same caddis in its final stage after laying its eggs.


Hook: Thread: Camel or tan 8/0
Body: Tan Antron
Wings: Dun Z-Lon
Head: Brown Antron

1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach thread 1/3 to rear on shank, wrap to rear of shank.
3. Make dubbing loop inserting body Antron. Twist tightly and pull off excess.
4. Wrap body forward to thread and tie in.
5. Lay Z-Lon across shank and figure-eight to attach so that wings are spread out to sides.
6. Make dubbing loop for head Antron and proceed as in step 3, wrapping a generous head.
7. Whip finish, cut thread.
