Alcohol was a factor in more than a fifth of the deaths and a nearly a third of all those who died were fishing. Drowning was the leading cause of death, killing 37 of the 61 victims, followed by deaths from collisions. Only one of the 37 drowning victims was wearing a life jacket.
A majority of the deaths, accidents and injuries happened in Northern California. Of the 41 deaths in the northern half of the state, 22 happened at lakes, seven on rivers, five along the coast, four in San Francisco Bay and three in the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta.
* San Jose Fly Shop is moving
We will be moving the store on June 30th and will be open on July 1 for business in our new location at the corner of Union Avenue and Los Gatos-Almaden Road (Safeway shopping center). It's officially in the town of Los Gatos, although we are across the street from San Jose (weird zoning). Yes, we will still be named "San Jose Fly Shop".
It was a long, and very serious decision. Here is the upside...very easy access off highway 85-near highway 880, exceptional parking, a beautiful shopping center, a store with 30' ceilings (no more taped rods on the ceiling).
With all of this means we will be able to do some things we've always wanted to do with the store. For you fly tiers, we will be expanding our materials by approximately 25%. We will be bringing in more hooks, supplies, and much, much more.
Thanks to so many of you for helping us build what we have today. We look forward to what's to come. Thank you all again for your support! - Tom Malech, San Jose Fly Shop
* "Tons O'Fun in the Little Yellow Submarine: What We Have Learned About Fishes and Oil Platforms in Southern and Central California"
July 14, 2004 at 7:00 PM in the Seminar Room of Moss Landing Marine Lab, 8272 Moss Landing Road.
What is to be done with offshore oil platforms once they are no longer economical to operate? How important are these structures as fish habitat? These questions will be addressed in a seminar presented by Dr. Milton Love of UCSB. Since 1995 Dr. Love has been studying the fishes that live around oil platforms and natural reefs in central and southern California. The seminar is free and open to the public. For more information call Friends of MLML at (831) 771-4100.
