Upcoming Fishing Outings

Seminar on Rules and Rigging for IGFA Fly Fishing World Records
Fishmaster: Harry Petrakis 425-1223 (H), 476-886 (Nursery)

When: Wednesday, September 8th 7:00 PM
Location: 2669 Mattis on Lane Santa Cruz (Far West Nursery) Ocean side of freeway just off frontage road between Soquel Ave and 41st. Ave exits.
We will be discussing the rules as they pertain to fishing and reporting as well as tackle and techniques. There are presently a number of world records which could easily be surpassed while fly fishing on the Rockfish Fishout. Here are some examples:
* Lingcod - the Men's 2 and 4 pound-test classes are vacant. The other classes are taken with 26-36 pound fish (unlikely to be beaten in Monterey Bay on the fly). The Ladies' 2 to 12 pound-test classes are vacant; in the 20 pound-test class, the record is held by a 16 lb. 9 oz. fish. This record could easily be beaten in Monterey Bay.
* Halibut - Men's 12 pound-test is held by a 17 lb, fish; the 16 and 20 pound-test classes are held with fish under 13 lbs! For the Ladies, all line class records are vacant (Ladies, all you have to do is catch a halibut and it's a world record). The Men's 8 and 12 pound-test records were caught in Capitola.
* White Sea Bass - In the Ladies' Division, all tippet classes from 2 to 20 pound-test are vacant, as are the Men's 2 to 6 pound-test classes. Also for the men, a 10 lb. fish will take the 8 pound-test record, and a 13 lb. fish will take the 12 pound-test class. The record in the 20 pound-test category is only 15 lbs. 8 oz.
* Thresher Shark - All line classes in Men's and Ladies' divisions are vacant.

' With all of these opportunities, it would be a shame to miss out on holding a world record, just because you didn't know the rules for rigging or verifying your catch. Harry will go over what is needed to submit your catch for world record status.

Rockfish and Deep Flyline Jiging Fishout, and BBQ-Swapmeet
(Please Note Change in Venue for BBQ)
Fishmaster: Harry Petrakis 425-1223

When: September 11, 2004. Launch at 6:30 AM. Fish until noon. Gather at the park for the barbecue at 2:00 PM.
Where: Either Capitola or Santa Cruz pier, depending on which is fishing best, where we will rent skiffs. The Barbecue will be at the Upper Harbor. (entrance is at the bitter end of Brommer Ave.) with fire lighting at 1:30 PM. Bring a lawn chair and something to cook on the BBQ, and a dish to share.
Cost: $35.00 per person if you are sharing a rental boat.
Prizes: Prizes will be awarded at the BBQ for the biggest and smallest fish.

The rental skiffs are very seaworthy and dependable. They are a good fishing platform and can hold plenty of coolers, boxes, rods and lunches. They cruise at 8 to 12 MPH depending on if you get a fast one or not. It will take around 20 minutes or less to get to the fishing spots. There will be two fishers to a boat. We will fish in pairs of boats with at least one of the two boats having (and someone on board knowing how to operate) a marine radio, GPS and fish finder/depth meter. I will be fishing from a skiff.
The on-the-water portion will be subject to cancellation if the conditions are too rough in which case the picnic-BBQ-swap meet will start at noon. In case anyone is interested in trying, there are currently a number of achievable world records for local species. More details on these records will follow in the August newsletter.
Equipment: 5-8 weight intermediate to fast sink shooting head or full length line, with 5 to 7 foot leader for suspended fish. For deeper reefs use 6 to 12 weight leadcore/amnesia rigs. If all of this is confusing rest assured that there will be plenty of help to set you up with the right equipment, well ahead of time. Just give me a call. We will have extra leadcore for everyone in case you get snagged. A bleach bottle with 90 feet of line and a 6oz sinker to mark your hot spot so you can drift over it again and again.
Flies: Brown over white clousers sizes 8 to 2/0, or the flash clouser featured as the Fly of the Month in the October, 2003 newsletter. Call Harry at 425-1223 (H), 419-4245 (Cell) if you have any questions or suggestions.

Delta Striper Fishout
October 23rd & 24th
Fishmaster: Ed Marcillac (707) 422-5300

Where: Russo's Marina and Camp Grounds (925) 684-2024
Sign-up: September and October Club Meetings

It's time for stripers - As we did in the past, we will camp at Russo's camp grounds. It's a good idea to call Russo's, (925-684-2024), for camping reservations to assure that you will have a spot. Boats may be rented from Chuck's Bait and Tackle Shop, (925-684-0668).
Boats may also be launched at Sugar Barge Resort just down the road from Russo's. You may make arrangements with Sugar Barge Resort to leave your boat in the water overnight. Boats may be launched and pulled out at any time; the ramp is open around the clock.
At the beginning of October, there should be many small fish, along with some good ones. This is a good time to fish with 6 weight rods.
There will be a sign-up list at the September and October meetings. After the meetings, contacts will be made to place everyone in boats for the two days - or one day - according to needs. Everyone should be there no later than 7 AM on Saturday, October 23, and the same 7 AM arrival time on Sunday, October 24. There are two restrooms nearby and a restaurant where we can enjoy dinner and review the day's fishing.

For additional info contact Ed Marcillac, (707-422-5300), or via email at marcillac@juno.com.
