Upcoming Fishing Outings

Seminar on Rules and Rigging for IGFA Fly Fishing World Records
Fishmaster: Harry Petrakis 425-1223 (H)

When: Wednesday, September 8th 7:00 PM.
Where: 2669 Mattison Lane Santa Cruz (Far West Nursery) Ocean side of freeway just off frontage road between Soquel Ave and 41st. Ave exits.
We will be discussing the rules as they pertain to fishing and reporting as well as tackle and techniques. There are presently a number of world records which could easily be surpassed while fly fishing on the Rockfish Fishout. With all of these opportunities, it would be a shame to miss out on holding a world record, just because you didn't know the rules for rigging or verifying your catch. Harry will go over what is needed to submit your catch for world record status.

Rockfish and Deep Flyline Jiging Fishout, and BBQ-Swap Meet
Fishmaster: Harry Petrakis 425-1223

When: September 11, 2004. Launch at 6:30 AM. Fish until noon. Gather at the harbor for the barbecue at 2:00 PM.
Where: Either Capitola or Santa Cruz pier, depending on which is fishing best, where we will rent skiffs. The Barbecue will be at the Upper Yacht Harbor (entrance is at the bitter end of Brommer Ave.) with fire lighting at 1:30 PM. Bring a lawn chair and something to cook on the BBQ, and a dish to share.
Cost: $35.00 per person if you are sharing a rental boat.
Prizes: Prizes will be awarded at the BBQ for the biggest and smallest fish.

The rental skiffs are very seaworthy and dependable. They are a good fishing platform and can hold plenty of coolers, boxes, rods and lunches. They cruise at 8 to 12 MPH depending on if you get a fast one or not. It will take around 20 minutes or less to get to the fishing spots. There will be two fishers to a boat. We will fish in pairs of boats with at least one of the two boats having (and someone on board knowing how to operate) a marine radio, GPS and fish finder/depth meter. I will be fishing from a skiff. The on-the-water portion will be subject to cancellation if the conditions are too rough in which case the picnic-BBQ-swap meet will start at noon. In case anyone is interested in trying, there are currently a number of achievable world records for local species. More details on these records will follow in the August newsletter.

Equipment: 5-8 weight intermediate to fast sink shooting head or full length line, with 5 to 7 foot leader for suspended fish. For deeper reefs use 6 to 12 weight leadcore/amnesia rigs. If all of this is confusing rest assured that there will be plenty of help to set you up with the right equipment, well ahead of time. Long casts with these heavier rigs are not necessary. Just give me a call. We will have extra leadcore for everyone in case you get snagged. A bleach bottle with 90 feet of line and a 6oz sinker to mark your hot spot so you can drift over it again and again.
Flies: Lefty's Deceiver (see Fly of the Month), Fast Eddy (see this month's Fly Tying Class or Fly of the Month in the October, 2003 newsletter), or brown over white clousers sizes 4 to 2/0.
Call Harry at 425-1223 (H), 419-4245 (Cell) if you have any questions or suggestions.

Mammoth Lakes Fishout
Fishmasters: John Cook (688-1551) and Paul Schraeder (475-4801)
Two weeks this year: September 18 Ð 25; and September 25 Ð October 2

This is a very popular club event. The assortment of fishing opportunities vary from alpine creeks, to spring creeks, to free stone rivers, and alpine lakes to desert reservoirs. A great place to learn and just plain have fun. So make your plans now and don't be left out.

Location: Mammoth Lakes is on the eastern side of the Sierras, about a 6 Ð 7 hour drive from Santa Cruz. There are many places to do stream or lake fishing in this area. We will be staying at the Fireside Condominiums in the town of Mammoth Lakes. There will be two units for each of the two weeks. Each unit will accommodate 8-9 people. The complex has a Jacuzzi and an indoor heated pool.
Cost: $200 per person. This covers seven nights of lodging at the condos, and three meals a day. You can sign up for either week at $200, or both weeks at $400 per person.
Sign-ups: Both weeks are filled, but you can call John Cook to get your name on the waiting list. First come, first served.

O'Connell-Bourdet Ranch Bass Fishout - October 9th

We are privileged as a club to have access to this picturesque property. The O'Connell-Bourdet Ranch offers bass fishing in waters rarely fished by anyone outside of the ranch owners and a few friends. The 18,000-acre ranch is located at the Casa de Fruta exit off Highway 152. Four-wheel vehicles are a must. Anyone interested in this one-day fishout can call me for more details. Cost: $70.

Delta Striper Fishout - October 23rd & 24th
Fishmaster: Ed Marcillac (707) 422-5300

Where: Russo's Marina and Camp Grounds (925) 684-2024
Sign-up: September and October Club Meetings
It's time for stripers - As we did in the past, we will camp at Russo's camp grounds. It's a good idea to call Russo's, (925-684-2024), for camping reservations to assure that you will have a spot. Boats may be rented from Chuck's Bait and Tackle Shop, (925-684-0668).
Boats may also be launched at Sugar Barge Resort just down the road from Russo's. You may make arrangements with Sugar Barge Resort to leave your boat in the water overnight. Boats may be launched and pulled out at any time; the ramp is open around the clock.
At the beginning of October, there should be many small fish, along with some good ones. This is a good time to fish with 6 weight rods.
There will be a sign-up list at the September and October meetings. After the meetings, contacts will be made to place everyone in boats for the two days - or one day - according to needs. Everyone should be there no later than 7 AM on Saturday, October 23, and the same 7 AM arrival time on Sunday, October 24. There are two restrooms nearby and a restaurant where we can enjoy dinner and review the day's fishing. For additional info contact Ed Marcillac, (707-422-5300), or via email at marcillac@juno.com.

Upper Sacramento/McCloud Fish Out - Thurs., Oct. 28-Sun. Oct. 31
Fishmaster: Bruce Dau 427-3974

Where: KOA, 900 N. Mt Shasta Blvd., Mt Shasta, CA - 800-562-3617
Signup: Wednesday Sept 8, call 427-3974 after 7 PM, payment due Sept 18
Cost: $18 for Friday-Sunday breakfast/lunch/snacks/drinks; $60 for three nights to stay in rustic log cabin, or you can arrange for your own campsite. (The prices for lodging are approximate, the exact amount will depend on the number on the fish out, but in years past these numbers are pretty close).
This is a great time of year to fish these two rivers, and see some beautiful fall colors. I've always had my best luck of the season in this time period. The October caddis should be active, with the rainbows trying to fatten up for winter. Additionally, the brown trout will be starting their spawning run in the conservancy section of the McCloud.
I will provide a simple breakfast, ingredients to make a sack lunch, and soft drinks and snacks for apres fishing. We will go into Mt. Shasta (five minutes away) for dinner, where there are a number of good restaurants. When you call to sign up please let me know which days (and nights) that you plan to attend, and if you will be camping on your own or staying in a cabin. Please send me the appropriate funds by September 18.
The log cabins have two rooms, with a double bed in one, and four bunk beds in the other. They have electricity, and portable electric heaters. You will need to bring your own sleeping bags/bedding and towels. There is a big, heated common bathroom area by the office with showers.
Fishing will be on your own Thursday. If you arrive before I return from fishing and want to get into a cabin, you can go to the office and tell them you're in the Santa Cruz Club group and get a key. Around dark we will make plans to hit a local restaurant. Call me if you have any questions.
There will be a sign-up list at the September meeting.
