Skykomish Sunrise
By Elaine Cook

There has been a lot of interest amongst club members for salmon and steelhead fishing. Many, many patterns work and don't need to resemble anything in nature. Here's a brightly colored one to add to your box.

Hook: TMC 7999 sizes 2-6 (you will notice that this hook has an upturned eye)
Thread: Red 6/0
Tail: Red and yellow hackle fibers
Rib: Silver tinsel, fine oval
Body: Red chenille
Hackle: Red and yellow strung hackle
Wing: White calf tail

1. Crimp barb.
2. Attach thread to mid-shank.
3. Select bunch of red hackle fibers that will extend beyond shank equal to hook gap; tie on top of hook shank.
4. Do the same with a bunch of yellow hackle fibers.
5. Attach strand of silver tinsel to rear of shank.
6. Also attach strand of red chenille to rear of shank.
7. Wrap thread to two eye lengths behind eye.
8. Wrap chenille forward, on wrap in front of the last, up to thread, tie off, cut excess.
9. Spiral rib in 5-6 wraps forward to thread, tie off, cut excess.
10. Select two hackle feathers, one red, one yellow, whose barbs will reach rear of shank when tied in place, and with little webbing.
11. Prepare hackle by cutting off thick end of stem and up to point where there is little or no webbing. Cut 3 or 4 barbs at stem end, short.
12. Lay hackle against shank, with shiny most colored side toward you with prepared butt ends in front of body. Tie in place.
13. Make 2-3 wraps around shank (sparse is better), tie off, cut excess.
14. Cut clump of calf tail (sparse is better), must reach to rear of hook, clean out under fur, lay on top of shank in front of body by butt ends, tie in place, cut butts at angle toward eye.
15. Tie over butt ends forming a thread head.
16. Whip finish, cut thread, apply drop of super or crazy glue to head.
