Our Club is Unique
By Kent Hull

In these discouraging times when the current Administration is relentlessly removing the safeguards we all thought we had against destruction of public resources (to us, especially watersheds and fisheries) for short term financial gain by a favored and powerful few, we can take some measure of satisfaction that we have something very valuable and largely immune to this depredation (if only because there's not a buck to be made from it by big biz).

What we have is this club, SCFF. Though we members are quite diverse in our backgrounds, opinions on a lot of things, level of prosperity, education, vocation, sense of humor and many other traits, we share in the warm regard we have for the club and by extension, for each other. In my 63+ years, I've never been in a club, association or society that didn't have a certain amount of backbiting, cliques vying for authority, and a continuous usually fairly low level of contention over how it is run and what its priorities should be. SCFF is the first organization I've ever seen that is free of this. In our history, we've had so few turkeys as members that the old(er) timers can remember each of them and tell stories about them. So despite the fact that opportunities for enjoying our sport are shrinking, we always seem to enjoy each other on outings, and more skilled and experienced members are always very generous and never dismissive or scornful with members with less experience, skill and knowledge. This warmth and generosity in spirit is truly unique in my experience, and something we owe to ourselves to enjoy as often as we can in as many of the club activities as we can attend.
