Spey Casting
Speaker: Jeff Putnam
Kiene's Fly Shop, Sacramento

The April guest speaker in one of California's premier Spey casting instructors, Jeff Putnam, from Sacramento's Kiene's Fly Shop. Jeff's introduction to the professional world of fly fishing was at the early age of 13 as a fly tier. He started guiding professionally three years later at age 16.

In the years that followed, Jeff honed his skills to a high level that attracted the attention of local fly shops and sponsors. Jeff has devoted more time to the sport of fly fishing over the last couple of years (remember, he is still in his early thirties) than the combined time on the water of most of the club membership. The one prominent achievement of his young life that stands out is his status as the first FFF-certified Spey casting instructor in our state.

Jeff will speak to our group on this arcane (to most of us) method of casting and will hold a demonstration and clinic at 5:00 PM on the ball field of the school grounds adjacent to Soquel Grange. As with most of us I have had limited practice time with a Spey rod and look forward to learning more about its use. If you are one of our members who likes to travel to Canada during the summer this meeting could get you started on a whole new track for casting giant streamers to Canadian coastal steelhead.
