Did someone say, "steelhead?" Yes, it's that time of the year. Here is an old standard that cam be very effective.

Hook:TMC 7999
(Salmon/Steelhead, TUE, 2XL, 1XH, Black)
Thread:Black 6/0
Tail:Mallard Flank
Rib:Silver Tinsel, Flat
Body:Black Chenille
Wing:Grizzly Hackle Tips
(Hen Hackle Preferred)
Hackle:Grizzly
(Hen Hackle Preferred)

1. Crimp Barb.
2. Start thread at mid-shank and wind to rear.
3. Tie in tail fibers, about 1/2 hook shank in length.
4. Tie in rib material.
5. Tie in chenille. (Note: once chenille is tied in, pull the fibers on the short end off of the thread core with your thumb and fingernail. With just the core threads to wrap over, the body will be neater.)
6. Wrap chenille forward to two eye lengths behind the eye, tie off and cut excess.
7. Counter-wrap body with about four turns of ribbing tinsel, tie off and cut excess.
8. Select matched hackle tips that are webby, with rounded tips.
9. Position wings with shiny sides together, on top of hook, one eye length behind eye, with tips extending to mid tail and in a slight vee over body. Tie in and cut off protruding stem ends.
10. Select soft, webby grizzly hackle with barb length twice the hook gap. Tie in by the butt end with shiny side toward you, feather tip toward rear of hook. Take two to three turns of hackle, brushing hackle barbs back as you wrap. Tie off and cut excess hackle. (Note: this is known as, "applying a hackle wet fly style.")
11. Wrap thread head, whip finish and apply head cement.

NOTE: Each of you club members is welcome and encouraged to submit your favorite fly for publication here. Please include a picture with your words of wisdom about why it's your favorite, how to tie it and how to fish it.
